DNA and relativity,  Richard Van Zandt's heritage

Birds of a feather

Excerpt from Belgenland manifest, 16 August 1889, lines 6-7 (29-30)

When the S.S. Belgenland sailed from Antwerp to Philadelphia in April 1890, several families aboard were from Buggenhout in East Flanders (Oost-Vlaanderen), Belgium. I speculated in Seeking the Verest connection about possible relationships  among these passengers. Why were they traveling together? We’ll take a look here at a few connections.

Homeland in Belgium

First, it might be useful to understand a little context.

Belgium lies in the southern part of the Low Countries of northwestern Europe. It has historically been a favored route for invading armies between France and Germany. Napoleon met his Waterloo there. Flanders, the northern region of Belgium, is of Dutch heritage. The people of Flanders speak a Dutch dialect called Flemish. Flanders consists of the provinces of West Flanders, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant, Antwerp and Limburg. Walloon, the southern region of Belgium, is essentially French. It contains the provinces of Hainaut, Walloon Brabant, Namur, Liège, and Luxembourg (which borders the like-named country). The old province of Brabant was divided in 1995 into Flemish and Walloon Brabant and the separate capital region of Brussels.

Buggenhout is at the eastern edge of East Flanders. Communities where some of our families lived in the nineteenth century were near each other in the provinces of East Flanders, Brabant and Antwerp. Their proximity can be seen in this map of the area around Buggenhout. Opdorp, for example, is also in East Flanders while Malderen and Steenhuffel were in the old province of Brabant. Mechelen, not far to the east, is in the province of Antwerp.

At the end of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries these provinces were were part of France after a long period of rule by Austrian and Spanish Hapsburgs. One benefit of French rule was the institution of civil registration of birth, marriage and death. I have used these records to discover families explored in this article. The official language, even after Belgian independence in 1830, was French. As a result, many records were entirely in French. Even after Flemish records were in Dutch, names were sometimes recorded in French or possibly Latin. Furthermore, the French Republican calendar was used at the turn of the eighteenth century and was the basis for dates in records of the time. Fortunately, a tool for date conversion to our Gregorian calendar is available here.

The Annaert family

As noted in Those baffling Belgians, J Annaert and L Van Sande sailed in August 1889 on the Belgenland from Antwerp to New York, bound for Chicago. What drew them there? Joseph Annaert and Lodewyk Van Sande were both farmers in Belgium. Were they looking for new vocations as well as a new place to live? Joseph and Lodewyk were brothers-in-law by virtue of Lodewyk’s marriage to Joseph’s sister Francisca.

Joseph and Francisca Annaert were among several children of Jan Frans Annaert and Maria Ludovica Hofmans. Their father Jan Frans was born about 1806 near Buggenhout, son of Joannes Annaert and Maria Anna Willocx. Joannes died December 16, 1873 at Buggenhout.[1] Joseph and Francisca’s mother Maria Ludovica (Marie Louise in her French birth registration) was born March 3, 1814 at Buggenhout[2] and died there December 10, 1867.[3] She was a daughter of Petrus Hofmans and Anna Maria Albrecht. I have found the following children of Jan Frans and Maria Ludovica Annaert:

  1. Maria Anna Annaert was born September 3, 1842 at Buggenhout.[4] She married Eduard Frans Buyens December 27, 1873.[5]
  2. Joseph Annaert was born August 26, 1844 at Buggenhout.[6] He married Maria Theresia De Bleser at Baasrode April 24, 1875.[7] He died March 28, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois.[8]
  3. Maria Eugenia Annaert was born November 17, 1846 at Buggenhout.[9] She died there April 27, 1847.[10]
  4. Johan Annaert was born April 8, 1848 at Buggenhout.[11]
  5. Rosalia Annaert was born October 8, 1850 at Buggenhout.[12] She married Pieter Jan De Bisschop there August 4, 1879.[13]
  6. Francisca Annaert was born July 13, 1853 at Buggenhout.[14] She married Frans Lodewyk Van Sande there November 25, 1874.[15] She died at Buggenhout December 8, 1886.[16]
  7. Judocus Adolphus Annaert was born June 4, 1856 at Buggenhout.[17] He died there November 5, 1857.[18]

These children were my wife Dee’s “Grandpa Van’s” mother, aunts and uncles.

Excerpt from Belgenland manifest, 16 April 1890, lines 216-228

Joseph Annaert’s wife and children were passengers on the Belgenland in April 1890. Joseph and Maria Theresia had at least six children:

  1. Marie Annaert was born May 7, 1876 at Buggenhout.[19] She married Henry Deblieck February 2, 1901 in Chicago[20] and died there March 2, 1909.[21]
  2. Celine Annaert was born May 11, 1877 at Buggenhout.[22] She married William Vanderpool in Chicago August 19, 1900.[23] She died about September 1962.[24]
  3. Petrus Joannes Annaert was born May 29, 1880 at Buggenhout.[25] He married Mary Van Walleghean March 12, 1900 in Chicago.[26] He died in Broward County, Florida in October 1963.[27]
  4. Desiré Annaert was born October 28, 1881 at Buggenhout.[28] She died there September 9, 1884.[29]
  5. Francisca Annaert was born December 26, 1882 at Buggenhout.[30] She married Maurice Thomas O’Connell June 8, 1907 in Chicago.[31] She died in Lake County, Illinois in May 1978.[32]
  6. Sophie Annaert was born December 19, 1885 at Buggenhout.[33] She married Victor De Wulf June 17, 1908 in Chicago.[34]She died February 26, 1969 in Illinois.[35]

Theresa Annaert died March 5, 1934 in Chicago.[36]

The Van Sande family

Francisca Annaert’s husband Lodewyk Van Sande was a son of Joseph Van Sande and Maria Josepha Van Riet. Joseph, son of Jan Baptist Van Sande and Joanne Marie Van Gucht, was born August 31, 1812 at Buggenhout.[37] Maria Josepha was born May 28, 1818 at Malderen, Brabant, Belgium, daughter of Frans Van Riet and Theresia Stassyns.[38] Joseph Van Sande married Maria Josepha Van Riet May 9, 1846 at Malderen.[39]

Note that I don’t know what given name Maria Josepha was known by. It was quite common in Europe for children to be given a formal first name and a middle name that they were called by. In Germany this was known as the rufname (call name). Mary was a particularly common first name in Roman Catholic areas.

I have discovered these children of Joseph and Maria Josepha Van Sande:

  1. Jan Baptist Van Sande was born August 14, 1846 at Buggenhout.[40] He married Paulina De Smedt October 24, 1874 at Buggenhout.[41]
  2. Franciscus Van Sande was born March 22, 1848 at Buggenhout.[42] He married Theresia Francisca Puttemans April 9, 1875 at Buggenhout.[43]
  3. An unnamed male child was stillborn January 7, 1850 at Buggenhout.[44]
  4. Frans Lodewyk Van Sande was born February 16, 1851 at Buggenhout.[45] As previously noted, he married Francisca Annaert there November 25, 1874.[46] After Francisca’s death, he married Monica Meert January 14, 1888 at Steenhuffel, Brabant, Belgium.[47] As Louis Van Zandt, he died February 3, 1892 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.[48] I have seen only one Belgian record referring to him as Louis but the French name was perhaps more familiar than Lodewyk in America.
  5. An unnamed male child was stillborn April 13, 1852 at Buggenhout.[49]
  6. Maria Theresia Van Sande was born July 4, 1853 at Buggenhout.[50] She married Jan Baptist Van Aken February 22, 1889 at Buggenhout.[51]
  7. Monica Francisca Van Sande was born November 13, 1855 at Buggenhout.[52]
  8. Charles Louis Van Sande was born March 15, 1858 at Buggenhout.[53] He married Sylvie Walraevens September 9, 1887 at Lebbeke, East Flanders, Belgium.[54]
  9. Coleta Van Sande was born December 27, 1860 at Buggenhout.[55]
  10. Maria Paulina Van Sande was born June 12, 1863 at Buggenhout.[56] She died there March 21, 1864.[57]

Lodewyk Van Sande, Joseph Annaert’s travel companion on their voyage to America, had several children with Joseph’s sister Francisca:

  1. Joseph Van Sande was born May 11, 1876 at Buggenhout.[58] He died there July 10, 1876.[59] Joseph’s father was identified as Frans Louis Van Sande on Joseph’s death registration, the only Belgian reference I have seen to his name as Louis.
  2. Jan Baptist Van Sande was born October 14, 1877 at Buggenhout.[60] He appears to have been listed in the April 1990 Belgenland manifest as ten-year-old Johannes Van Zande. He would have been twelve at the time. His age was presumably given by his step-mother Monica, his mother having died when he was nine. Like his father, who died when Jan Baptist was fourteen, he was known as Louis in America. Was Louis or Lodewyk an unrecorded middle name? As Louis Van Zandt, he married Carolina Catharina Van Staey September 29, 1906 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.[61] Lena was born as Carolina Catharina Schurgers December 21, 1888 at Merksem, Antwerp, Belgium.[62] Louis died July 14, 1972 in Elmhurst, Du Page County, Illinois.[63] Louis and Lena were the paternal grandparents that Dee knew.
  3. Petrus Josephus Van Sande was born July 16, 1879 at Buggenhout.[64] He died there December 13, 1879.[65]
  4. Karel Van Sande was born June 23, 1881 at Buggenhout.[66] Karel was known as Charles Louis Van Zandt in America. He married Josephine Baxa June 5, 1906 in Chicago.[67] He died in January 1963 in Elmhurst.[68]
  5. Irma Francisca Van Sande was born August 6, 1883 at Buggenhout.[69] She was listed as Anna in the Belgenland manifest. As Emma Van Zandt, she married Fred Wille August 1, 1906 in Chicago.[70] She died November 18, 1922 in Chicago.[71]
  6. Maria Van Sande was born August 8, 1885 at Buggenhout.[72] She died there January 16, 1886.[73]
Excerpt from marriage registration, Frans Lodewyk Van Sande and Monica Meert

Lodewyk Van Sande and Monica Meert had three children together:

  1. Richard Joseph Coleta Van Sande was born October 14, 1888 at Buggenhout.[74] He was Dee’s paternal grandfather, although she never knew him. As Richard Van Zandt, he married Emma Hrobar (recorded as Robash) September 23, 1916 in Chicago.[75] Richard and Emma had seven children before he disappeared sometime in the 1930s. Their first child died in infancy. According to Dee’s mother Dorothy Van Zandt, who died in 2012, some if not all of the remaining six children were placed in an orphanage when Emma was unable to provide for them. Richard’s half-brother Louis Van Zandt and his wife Lena took in the two oldest living children, then took in Dee’s father after his older sister married. I still don’t know what happened to Dee’s grandfather Richard for the rest of his life.
  2. Joanna Helena Van Sande was born February 7, 1890 at Grembergen, East Flanders, Belgium.[76] Her birth registration noted that her father Lodewyk was in Chicago at the time of her birth. She died June 4, 1890 in Chicago.[77]
  3. Willie (possibly Willem or William) Van Zandt was born July 19, 1892 in Chicago, five months after his father died.[78] Willie died in Chicago September 9, 1892.[79]

Of the nine known children of Lodewyk with Francisca and Monica, only four lived to adulthood. Dee’s grandfather Richard was the only child of Lodewyk and Monica to survive infancy.

Excerpt from Belgenland manifest, 16 April 1890, lines 229-240

How did the family name, Van Sande, become Van Zandt in the New World? Was it a result of a hard ‘S’ pronunciation? When Lodewyk and Joseph sailed to New York in 1889 he was listed in the manifest as L Van Sande, but Monica was listed as Van Zande on her 1890 voyage. The name conversion might have been influenced by people already in America with a Netherlands Dutch variation of the surname. There were Van Zandts in Illinois before Lodewyk came. I don’t know where these earlier Illinois Van Zandts originated. Van Zandts in New Amsterdam (now New York City) in the 1600s might have been from the Netherlands.

The Meert family

Monica Meert was born in Steenhuffel, Brabant, one of many children of Judocus Franciscus Meert. Judocus first married Constantia Van Doorslaer February 7, 1839 at Malderen, Brabant.[80] Constantia was born October 3, 1811 at Malderen[81] and died April 28, 1848 at Steenhuffel.[82] Judocus and Constantia had three children:

  1. Petrus Antonius Meert was born April 2, 1840 at Steenhuffel.[83]
  2. Joannes Baptista Meert was born August 28, 1841 at Steenhuffel.[84]
  3. Maria Elisabeth Meert was born September 20, 1845 at Steenhuffel[85] and died there March 22, 1848.[86]

After Constantia’s death Judocus married Joanna Francisca Verbelen December 7, 1848 at Steenhuffel.[87] Joanna Francisca was born November 25, 1824 at Steenhuffel[88] and died there November 24, 1888.[89] They had at least eleven children:

  1. Ludovicus Meert was born September 16, 1849 at Steenhuffel.[90] He married Joanna Maria Van Doorslaer December 8, 1878 at Hombeek, Antwerp.[91]
  2. Carolus Ludovicus Meert was born September 27, 1850 at Steenhuffel[92] and died there July 12, 1853.[93]
  3. Monica Meert was born April 13, 1852 at Steenhuffel.[94] She married Frans Lodewyk Van Sande January 14, 1888 at Steenhuffel[95] and Bruno Van Hecke (or Van Hacke) April 16, 1893 in Chicago.[96] Bruno was also a native of Belgium. Monica had three children with Bruno: Karl, Maria and Frank Van Hacke. She died January 14, 1901 in Chicago.[97]
  4. Henricus Meert was born June 8, 1854 at Steenhuffel.[98]
  5. Petrus Josephus Meert was born September 3, 1855 at Steenhuffel[99] and died there December 3, 1855.[100]
  6. Joanna Coleta Meert was born December 19, 1856 at Steenhuffel.[101]
  7. Carolus Ludovicus Meert was born November 16, 1858 at Steenhuffel[102] and died there April 6, 1863.[103]
  8. Maria Clementina Meert was born November 1, 1860 at Steenhuffel.[104] She married Antonius Eduardus Van Beveren July 20, 1881 at Hombeek, Antwerp.[105]
  9. Anna Maria Meert was born March 23, 1862 at Steenhuffel.[106] She married Felix Alfons Verest January 8, 1890 at Buggenhout.[107] She died April 16, 1945 in Chicago.[108] Alphonse and Marie Verest took in children of Lodewyk Van Sande and Francisca Annaert after the deaths of both of their parents and the remarriage of their step-mother Monica, Marie’s sister.[109]
  10. Carolus Ludovicus Meert was born August 29, 1863 at Steenhuffel.[110]
  11. Joannes Dyonisius Meert was born May 16, 1866 at Steenhuffel.[111]

Monica Van Sande sailed for America with two older daughters in addition to Lodewyk Van Sande’s children:

  1. Jeanette Meert was reportedly born in March 1880 in Belgium.[112] She married George Lake Barrett October 14, 1903 in Chicago.[113]
  2. Maria Josephina Meert was born August 8, 1883 at Mechelen, Antwerp, Belgium.[114] She married August Joos, presumably before the birth of their daughter in 1913.[115] August was likely a son of immigrants from the Buggenhout area where Joos families are found in the records. They were divorced by 1920.[116] Josephine had married Philip Kent by 1930.[117]
Excerpt from marriage registration, Felix Verest and Marie Sophie Keppens

The Verest family

Monica Meert Van Sande’s sister Anna Maria and her husband Felix Alfons Verest sailed to America with the Annaert and Van Sande families in April 1890. Alfons was a son of Pieter Francis Verest, born February 6, 1831 at Opdorp, East Flanders,[118] and of Anna Theresia Albrecht, born October 15, 1833 at Buggenhout.[119] Pieter Francis and Anna Theresia were married August 7, 1856 at Buggenhout.[120] I have found seven sons and a daughter from their marriage:

  1. Felix Verest was born January 11, 1857 at Opdorp.[121] He married Marie Sylvie Keppens July 16, 1877 at Buggenhout.[122] Marie Sylvie, sometimes recorded as Maria Sylvia, was born May 19, 1858 at Buggenhout, daughter of Franciscus Keppens and Maria Theresia Van Sande.[123] Maria Theresia, born October 4, 1815, was a daughter of Jan Baptist Van Sande and Joanne Marie Van Gucht and a sister of Joseph Van Sande.[124] Marie Sylvie Keppens Verest was Lodewyk Van Sande’s first cousin.
  2. Philibertus Raymondus Verest was born November 29, 1858 at Opdorp.[125]
  3. Felix Alfonsius Verest was born April 9, 1861 at Opdorp.[126] As already noted, Alfons married Anna Maria Meert January 8, 1890 at Buggenhout.[127] He died December 22, 1940 in Chicago.[128]
  4. Gustavus Verest was born January 31, 1864 at Opdorp.[129] He married Maria Francisca Vande Velde May 9, 1890 at Buggenhout.[130]
  5. Adolphus Damianus Verest was born March 13, 1866 at Opdorp.[131]
  6. Camilius Verest was born May 9, 1869 at Opdorp.[132] Camille married Paulina Van Gucht May 13, 1891 at Buggenhout.[133]
  7. Charles Louis Verest was born October 4, 1874 at Buggenhout.[134] He married Josephine Van Gaever June 2, 1899 at Baasrode, East Flanders, Belgium.[135] He died April 26, 1950 at Bremen, Cook County, Illinois.[136]
  8. Francisca Verest was born September 1, 1877 at Buggenhout.[137]

The Albrecht family

Gustaaf and Maria Josefa Albrecht with their children were also passengers aboard the Belgenland in April 1890. Gustaaf was born February 26, 1851 at Buggenhout, son of Petrus Joannes Albrecht and Anna Theresia De Ridder.[138] Gustaaf married Maria Josefa Keppens October 19, 1878 at Buggenhout.[139] Maria Josefa, born November 16, 1862 at Buggenhout, was a daughter of Franciscus Keppens and Maria Theresia Van Sande.[140] Maria Josefa was a sister of Marie Sylvie Keppens Verest and cousin of Lodewyk Van Sande. I have found eight children of Gustaaf Albrecht and Maria Josefa Keppens:

  1. Joannes Nicolaus Albrecht was born March 1, 1879 at Buggenhout.[141]
  2. Camille Albrecht was born February 9, 1883 at Buggenhout[142] and died there July 15, 1883.[143]
  3. Karel Frans Albrecht was born July 14, 1884 at Buggenhout[144] and died there December 3, 1884.[145]
  4. Camille Albrecht was born November 9, 1885 at Buggenhout.[146]
  5. Felix Alfons Albrecht was born January 25, 1888 at Buggenhout.[147] He married Jennie Thums December 30, 1911 in Chicago.[148] Alphonse died July 26, 1949 in Chicago.[149]
  6. Maria Louisa Albrecht was born January 2, 1890 at Buggenhout.[150] She married Alexis Joseph Morrison September 16, 1911 in Chicago and died there January 26, 1935.[151]
  7. Minnie Albrecht was born February 16, 1893 in Chicago.[152]
  8. Irene Albrecht was born June 27, 1895 in Chicago.[153] She married Earl Paul Anderson there August 20, 1919.[154] She died December 23, 1956 in Chicago.[155]

As already noted, Felix and Alfons Verest’s mother Anna Theresia Verest was also an Albrecht, as was Joseph and Francisca Annaert’s grandmother Anna Maria.

More connections

As we have seen, the Annaert, Van Sande, Meert, Verest and Albrecht families who sailed for America in April 1890 were interconnected and clearly travelled together intentionally. I have not found a connection with E. Van Praet, who was listed with the Annaert family, but Van Praets were connected with Van Guchts and other related families. Emil Mistiaen was listed among these families as well, but I’m not aware of a family connection. Frans Mistiaen was the municipal official who recorded many of the civil registrations in Buggenhout referenced here.

These families apparently lived in the area of Buggenhout, Opdorp, Malderen, Steenhuffel, Lebbeke and other nearby communities for a long time. I have found records identifying members of the Van Sande family living there back to the early eighteenth century (1700s). The sprawling city of Chicago in the 1890s must have been a very new world for these families from Buggenhout.

Dee has very few DNA matches in this part of her family. I now know Dee’s relationship to three matches on Ancestry:

  • Michael is a great-grandson of Dee’s grandfather Richard Van Zandt.
  • Ronald is a great-great-grandson of Dee’s great-grandmother Monica Meert through Jeanette Meert. Jeanette’s father has not been identified, but I have previously reported family information suggesting that her father could have been a brother of Lodewyk. Charles Louis Van Sande was Lodewyk’s only unmarried brother during the projected time of Jeanette’s birth. Jeanette was a Van Zandt at the time of her marriage, but that could have simply been a reflection of the family in which she grew up.
  • Debra is a great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Dee’s great-great-great-grandparents Jan Baptist Van Sande and Joanna Maria Van Gucht. Debra is descended from Maria Theresia Van Sande. Dee and Debra are fourth cousins once removed.

One recent discovery on Family Tree DNA is with a match named Kristof who originated in Bornem, north of Buggenhout. He has Van Sande and Van Gucht ancestors, and several of his ancestral lines are in familiar families from my record searches.

Flocking together

People in the past who migrated together were often members of the same family, church or community. That has certainly proven to be the case with the Belgenland families from Buggenhout in April of 1890.
